George Zuk (Empress of Ireland survivor)
Born January 1, 1882
Died December 12, 1935

George was a survivor of the Empress of Ireland shipwreck (May 29, 1914). The family (George, Maria, Wladisaw and Josefa) had purchased tickets at Chicago, Illinois (destination Lemberg, Poland). According to information received from the Canadian Pacific Railway, George was taken to Jeffrey Hale Hospital in Quebec for treatment after he was rescued.  His wife Maria and the two children (Wladisaw and Josefa) did not survive. The children's bodies were identified by George. He was at the Chateau Frontenac Hotel in Quebec City on June 2. Josefa was buried June 2 by the Hebrew Society. The grave locations are unknown.  The two children are buried somewhere at Quebec City but we have been unable to find their graves.  George held a ticket to New York and wished leave soon as possible.

George later married Louise Stypula (from Tarnow, Poland) and settled in St. Louis, Missouri in 1919.  They had three children: Walter (named after Wladisaw), Josephine (named after Josefa) and Henry.  George died of cancer of the esophagus in 1935 in Madison, Illinois, where he worked in a steel mill.

George Zuk was spelled Zouk on the ship's passenger list.
