My dad's grandpa, my great grandfather Charles Swan was on this ship. I have all
of the papers from my local library that carried all the people who were local. Many
of them were on a tour from Barron County where I still live today. I have the first
paper where he was listed for dead. I have all of his stories recorded as my dad told them
to me. This was so fascinating, I will never foget the day I cam across the
articles on the microfilm at the library. I have much information from the local
papers and also from a magazine. My great grandfather amazingly did live he floated
on wreckages from the ship and managed to hang on for days. He unfortunantely landed
on shore and was severely beat by a group of men. This beating occured because he
had one years worth of gold around his waste in a money belt. He did get back here
to where we all live and have since the first boat trip over. (You see his voyage on
the Empress of Ireland was to visit the "Old Country" and to spend time with
family). He died several years later after he came back home. He mostly died
according to my dad and mom because after the beating he was never physically o.k. I
have been fascinated with him and his stories as told to me as a child. I am 36 and
my son is 13 and we are always looking for more information concerning my family.
