I know very little about my family on that side and I greatly appreciate any
information that I can get. I am the only child of one of Rachel's grandsons who was
himself an only child. Unfortunately, I was never able to keep up with the rest of the
family except for my grandparents. All I know about my great-grandmother is only what I
heard from my grandfather:
Rachel (Pass) Phillips (1859-1914) and her husband Elijah Phillips were
originally from Manchester, England. They had moved to Canada sometime between 1897 and
1914 and were settled for at least a while in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Rachel did not like
Canada. After only a short stay she determined, for whatever reason, that even if it meant
leaving her husband and most of her ten children behind, she was going back to England.
She took with her the two youngest children, their son Hubert, aged 11 and their daughter
Ethel, aged 13. They never made it. If I recall correctly, it was reported that Rachel
died in the collision, and Ethel and Hubert later drowned.
