Final Voyage - Passenger & Crew Tribute

Harold & Elsie Neville
[submitted by Richard Easterbrook]

I have enclosed a photograph of passenger Harold South (stage name Harold Neville), who was 29 at the time of his death on the Empress of Ireland. He was a promising young actor/manager in Lawrence Irving's company. He had appeared several times on the London stage, and was finishing a tour of Canada with his wife Elsie Neville (stage name Elsie Vron).

The couple left three children in England,of whom my mother née Honor South is the only survivor, living now in Worthing, England. After the disaster she was  cared for by Harold's father, Walter, who lived in Wanstead, East London, and then by her father's brother, Clifford. She is currently writing her memoirs of that time. Chief among her memories is how little the shipwreck was spoken of in the family. Only the story of the coal transporter was told, and how by withdrawing from the hole it had made in the Empress's side it sealed the great liner's fate. Those were days of greater reticence than now. However, she is very interested in the website, and has always wanted to know about her parents' last resting place.

The photograph shows Harold Neville as Iago, from Shakespeare's "Othello" (although someone has mistakenly written "Macbeth" on the back of the postcard). Other than this photo we have very little information on my grandfather, and what sort of person he might have been. I wonder whether anyone else has information? No letters or memorabilia survive in our family.
