Final Voyage - Passenger & Crew Tribute

Mrs. Emma Smith Martin
[submitted by Michelle]

My Grandmother had told me that her Grandmother, Emma (Payne) Martin was on the  Empress of Ireland  when it had gone down.  Emma had come over from England to visit her son, Leonard James Martin, who lived in Canada.  Emma had made  it to shore but later died of hypothermia.  She was later buried in a cemetery near Toronto.(But good luck on that tid bit of info)  I know Toronto has been built up quite a bit in the past years.

This is all the information I could gather, if you happen to find anything  on Emma or the  family, could you please e-mail me.

I have searched through the CPR Passenger Listing and found your great grandmother.  The listing reads exactly:

Name Tickets Purchased at Destination Remarks
MARTIN, Mrs. Emma Smith Toronto, Ontario London England Lost, Body Identified

Michelle:

Emma only had 2 children, Leonard, and Elsie.  Also I was told her maiden name was Payne, not Smith, I will have to call my Grandmother and ask her.  Other than that I don't have anything, see they lived there in England, all the family I know is here in the U.S.  My grandmother said her mother never really talked about  it.
