Empress of Ireland 1906 - 1914 Final Voyage - Passenger & Crew Tribute
Alexander
Christopher Craik
[submitted by Brian Craik]
He was Alexander
Christopher Craik. I do not know the names of others in the
photos, but I would love to have their names, if someone else
is able to supply them. Alexander went down with the Empress.
There is a story that he was seen on deck and went back inside
the ship, and so my grandmother received a message in the
morning that he was rescued. In the afternoon she received
another to say that he was lost. In the photo with Matthew
James Craik on it Matthew is on the left and Alex on the
right. Seated in front of Matthew is his wife May Firth. The
other woman sitting is Helen Craik, Matthew and Alex's sister.
The young boy is Alex's son Alexander John Brodie Craik (born
1898), my uncle who ran away to the first war at the age of 16
when he heard of his father's death. He later came to Canada
and served as an Ontario Provincial policeman. The young girl
in the picture is my aunt Margaret, Alex's eldest daughter
born 1900. I think that the photo was taken about 1908 or
1909. Matthew Craik worked on the CP ship The Dutchess of
Bedford and his eldest son Alex Craik Jr. served on the Queen
Mary.
