Ships and Shipwrecks of the Americas: A History Based on Underwater Archaeology
by George F. Bass
Ships and Shipwrecks of the Americas brings together for the first time the remarkable work of leading nautical archaeologists, each with firsthand diving experience. Twelve chapters tell the story of watercraft in the Americas, from the first native dugouts and balsa rafts to the sinking of the Titanic and the loss of the Battleship Arizona at Pearl Harbor.
With 376 illustrations, 80 in colour.

Details:
Every phase of American history is represented - from the time of the spanish galleons, to the War of Independence and the era of the steamboat.  The excavations described in these pages cast new life on the life below-decks and on sometimes tragic last hours of the sailors and sea captains whose ships opened up the waterways of the New World.

George F. Bass is recognized internationally as the founding father of modern underwater archaeology.  Over the past thrity-five years he has excavated numerouse shipwrecks and pioneered many of the techniques now used in underwater research.  The author of several books, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Distinquished Archaeological Achievement by the Archaeological Institute of America in 1986.  George Bass is founder and archaeological director of the Institue of Nautical Archaeology, and Professor of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&M University.
