Frequently Asked Question
about NDI Charts
|
General
Product |
NDI’s digital
ocean® charts can be
printed for backup purposes for personal use. However
these printed copies are not a legal document and you may
not be covered by your insurance company.
To Top
Raster charts are an exact replica of the paper charts.
They are a geo-referenced digital image of the paper
charts – similar to a picture. The
digital ocean® raster
chart is the only officially released raster electronic
chart product on the market.
Vector charts are "smart charts" and have a database of
information associated with them. For instance, on a
vector chart you can query different features such as
lights and buoys and retrieve additional information on
them. Vector charts also allow users more control over the
display of the chart such as turning different layers of
information on and off. The only officially released
vector product is the S57 ENC product. No other vector
product is officially released for Canadian waters.

Digital Ocean®
Raster CDs |
NDI receives all of the Notices to Mariners which are
issued by the Canadian Coast Guard. These notices are
applied to the digital charts periodically. Starting in
2002, a raster updating service is included in the
purchase of your NDI product for the calendar year of the
CD edition. Additional years may be purchased by upgrading
your product. The raster updating service is an on-line
chart updating service which will update the users charts
twice in that calendar year, once in April and once in
July.
To Top
NDI is committed to providing the best products that
contribute to the safety of navigation and to increased
enjoyment of boating. We believe that the updated charts
are a necessity in planning and implementing a safe
voyage.
As oceans, lakes and water ways are very dynamic
environments with continuous changes in water levels,
datum and underwater obstacles, nautical charts change
significantly from year to year. In order to deliver these
changes to the boating public, NDI releases a new edition
of the digital ocean®
raster nautical charts
annually. Additionally, in 2002, we instituted an on-line
updating service to deliver updates in a more timely
fashion.
In order to maximize boaters safety and fun objectives
and ensure continuous updating and distribution of charts,
all digital ocean®
products are licensed
for 1 year of use. This is written into the license
agreement contained with your
digital ocean®
product.
To Top
NDI allows you to install your product on 2 different
machines to allow users to have the data installed on
their home computers as well as their on-board computer.
NDI offers a 50%
upgrade to any user who upgrades
to the current addition CD. The new CD also comes with two
free updates for the year. Please
visit our Upgrade Center for more information.

Raster On-line Updating Service |
The chart update patch will find the location on your
hard drive where your charts are found and then replace
any charts which have notices applied against them.
After running the patch, you will see a message box
that says "Congratulations! You have successfully updated
your 200_ digital
ocean® charts."
No, you can not view the differences between the
original charts and the updated charts. Please check the
download page for information on which notices to mariners
have been applied.
To Top
This error occurs if your
digital ocean®
CD is NOT installed on your hard drive. All of the
charts must be on your hard drive and you must run the
patch from your hard drive. If you use your charts from
the CD, the update patch will not update your charts.
No, the old charts are replaced by the new ones and are
not backed up.
®
CD again?
If you re-install your CD you will have to run the
update patch again. The update does not get saved on your
CD, the CD contains only the original charts.
The updates will only work for the 2002 CD’s and newer.
The updates are only available for the calendar year of
the CD, for example, a 2002 CD can not download the 2003
updates.

There are many popular brands of navigation software
which work with DigitalOcean®
charts. When selecting one, there are several factors to
consider:
Ease of use functionality - NDI distributes value-added
data with our CDs such as a marinas database, an index
file, and a place names database. All of these features
may not be supported by every navigation software. price
Many software companies will provide free demo software
for you to try before purchasing. Please contact the
software companies for more information.
DigitalOcean®
charts work only with a PC based system. DigitalOcean®
charts can not be installed onto a handheld GPS such as
Garmin’s etrak.
DigitalOcean®
charts will work on an Apple operating system if the
customer purchases a navigation software that will operate
on an Apple operating system. There are several products
on the market so please search the web or visit a local
marine supply shop for more information. NDI does not
distribute any Apple Navigation software.
